Context: The setting is a high school EFL class in Korea. Students are at the low intermediate level. This class is held once a week. The 18 students in the class range in age from 16 to 17. Goal: By the end of the course, students will be able to actively engage in social conversation in English. (Lesson focus: situations in a restaurant.) Objectives: ①Students will successfully comprehend how to order food at a restaurant. ②Students will be familiar with the basic etiquette that should be used in a restaurant. ③Students will learn some vocabulary words from the dialogue and know when to use them. ④Students will know how to participate in role playing regarding the situation of ordering in a restaurant. ⑤Students will be able to summarize and explain what they watched in the video clip. ⑥Students will learn useful expressions regarding how to order food at a restaurant and express their opinion freely. Materials and equipment -Desktop -A short video clip that is related to the specific topic of the day (ordering food at a restaurant) -Projector -Textbook -A menu for role-play Procedures Pre-speaking activities (10 minutes)
A.Teacher asks students to imagine that you are going to a restaurant in the United States of America for the first time and in pairs, answer the questions below. i)What kind of food do you like?
ii)What is your favorite restaurant? iii)What could be the most popular food in the United States? iv)Can you think of three manners that should be respected at a restaurant? B.Students are given a list of food and the corresponding pictures to match. Teacher then asks students which food they would prefer to order. C.Teacher asks students to imagine ordering food and what kind of conversation would there be between a customer and a waiter. Students briefly write them down. D.Teacher gets some answers from the students and writes them on the board.
Speaking activities (60 minutes)
1.Watching a short video clip
A.Teacher gives out a handout that contains the script of the video that the students are going to watch. (The video is an excerpt from an American TV series, Everybody Loves Raymond, related to ordering food at a restaurant.) The script has occasional blanks, and students are to fill in the blanks. The hint of the vocabulary that fits in the blanks is provided in the box below the script. B.Teacher puts the video on. For the first time, teacher tells students to put the pen down and just watch. As they watch it for the second time, students start filling the blanks. C.They share the answer together. Teacher asks whether there is any vocabulary or expression that they are not sure of. D.Students match the words, which are from the script, with a correct meaning.
